Department for Media Law and Policy

The Department for Media Law and Policy with the Independent Journalism Center (IJC) appeared in September 1999.

It has the goal of improving the media legislation environment in Moldova through reviewing draft laws and existing legislation, providing assistance to journalists and monitoring the violations of freedom of expression and information.

This is accomplished through various activities:

  • media legislation monitoring and analysis, participation in proposals for improving existing legislation;
  • providing free consultation on all questions referring to the Moldovan media legislation;
  • organizing courses, seminars and round tabels on different media law issues;
  • publishing articles on media law, making the journalists aware of the latest developments in media legislation;
  • developing courses on media law for students studying journalism and law at Moldovan universities;
  • coordinating, in special cases, free legal representation of journalists in court.
  • contributing to the implementation of the Law on Access to Information and of the European standards on freedom of expression.

Legal consulting for journalists and media organizations is provided by MLU free of charge. Services range from supplying legal texts to consultation regarding official registration and legal status change. The Media Law Unit receives more than 15 requests per month from local journalists and foreign media experts on issues like defamation problems, access to information, publicity, author rights, private life and other.

IF YOU NEED A CONSULTATION ON MEDIA LAW ISSUES, YOU CAN CONTACT THE MEDIA LAW UNIT THROUGH THE WEB PAGE, BY PHONE, BY FAX OR YOU ARE WELCOME TO COME IN PERSON TO OUR HEADQUARTERS.
