Moldova 1 tv channel director selected
20.02.10/ Angela Sîrbu is the new director of Moldova 1 TV channel. She was elected by the Observers’ Council (OC) of the Public Company “Teleradio-Moldova” (TRM) on February 20.
 
The governement favors the draft of the law on the freedom of expression
11.02.10/ The Government gave a favorable notice to the draft of the Law on the Freedom of Expression, developed at the initiative of the Independent Journalism Center. The document provides for setting up guarantees to ensure the right to the freedom of expression and information, as well as striking a balance between ensuring the right to the freedom of expression and information, and the right to the protection of honor, dignity, professional reputation and private and family life.
 
The situation of the press in Moldova significantly deteriorated in 2009
09.02.2010/ Independent Journalism Center issues the fifth annual report on the situation of the press in Moldova. The annual report of 2009 contains five main chapters which report on the evolutions and trends in the public audiovisual, print and online press, and for the first time includes an analysis of the media in Transnistria region.
 
IREX - IJC media program in Moldova continues with new activities
01.02.10/ The Independent Journalism Centre (IJC) launched a new stage of the IREX Media Program in Moldova, on February 1. Thus, IJC will continue to build professional capacity of the regional television stations by organizing training activities for managers, journalists, cameramen and editors. A professional internship program involving placement of Chisinau School of Advanced Journalism graduates at the network stations will be also prepared. The goal of the program is to expand the pool of qualified TV reporters with local news experience and add to station reporting staff.
 
Media NGOs statement regarding the decision of BCC to stop the broadcast of Ploaia de Argint radio
21.01.10/ The Broadcasting Coordinating Council (BCC) decided, on January 19, to take the frequencies previously held by Ploaia de Argint out of the contest for use of radio and television frequencies, in order to comply with the injunction issued by the Chisinau Court of Appeal. At the same time, the BCC decided to suspend the broadcast of the radio station, whereas it had decided earlier on October 26, to allow the station to continue its activity until Ploaia de Argint would be assigned a new broadcasting license.
 
Media and human rights NGOs statement on intimidation of a Moldovan investigative newspaper

21.12.09/ Media and human rights NGOs speak out against threats toward Ziarul de Garda (ZdG) following a series of investigations on alleged corruption at the National Railway Company in Chisinau.

After publishing in the last issues of ZdG (26 November, 3 and 10 December) three parts of the investigative report The corruption train in Chisinau railway station, a series of phone, electronic and direct threats have been sent to the authors of the investigation and their families, to the entire newspaper’s team, as well as to the sources who offered information to journalists.
