Trafficking prevention no priority for mainstream press, monitoring shows (1 April)
IJC @ 10:30 PST, 01/04/05

In January-February, prevention of trafficking and offering new perspectives to vulnerable population segments were not among priority issues for mainstream Moldovan media. This is the major conclusion of the first media monitoring bulletin, which was produced by the Independent Journalism Center (IJC) in the framework of the project "New Perspectives for Women." The program, which will span 42 months, includes a variety of training, information and support activities, which are expected to benefit more than 35,000 vulnerable women in the country. The media monitoring component includes in-depth analysis of coverage of relevant issues by seven major national papers. In the first monitoring period newspapers largely failed to provide a clear problem perspective and suggest solutions. In terms of story types, genres and information sources the coverage lacked variety and depth. Portrayal of victims and traffickers lacked sufficient details. Monitoring bulletins are produced in Romanian, Russian, and English. The next issue will cover the period March-May 2005. For more information, or to obtain a copy of the bulletin, please contact Natalia Angheli-Zaicenco at nangheli@ijc.md (IJC).
