Radio journalists learn techniques of covering human trafficking (29 March)
IJC @ 10:30 PST, 29/03/05

Fourteen radio journalists, largely from local stations, learned ways of covering human trafficking issues during a three-day workshop in Chisinau. The seminar is part of "New Perspectives for Women," a comprehensive four-year program aimed to empower past or potential trafficking victims and raise public awareness about relevant phenomena. The agenda included presentations of special radio projects aimed to combat trafficking, as well as sessions on modeling broadcasts to serve specific audiences, working with sources, and producing radio talk shows on the issue. Special attention was devoted to discussions about media role in promoting socially-significant issues. The training was led by Pavlo Novikov of Internews, Ukraine, and Vitalie Dogaru, reporter at the Moldovan office of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. "New Perspectives for Women" is administered by the American non-governmental organization Winrock International in partnership with the Independent Journalism Center (IJC). Funding has been provided by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The program includes a variety of training, information and support activities, which are expected to benefit over 35,000 vulnerable women in Moldova. The IJC participates in the implementation if the project awareness-enhancement component. The program will also include in-house consultations, study trips to Ukraine, as well as production of specialised shows on the issue. Last month IJC hosted a similar training for TV producers (IJC).
