Breaking news predominate in coverage of human trafficking (3 October)
IJC @ 10:30 PST, 28/10/05

Short articles featuring instances of trans-national trafficking predominated in the coverage of this phenomenon by seven mainstream Chisinau-based newspapers in June-August 2005. This was one of the major conclusions of the monitoring report, which was produced by the Independent Journalism Center (IJC) under the auspices of the “New Perspectives for Women” (NPW) project. Journalists covering human trafficking rarely followed up on issues raised in breaking stories. Diversity of sources was insufficient, and such journalistic genres as interviews, opinion pieces and features remained under-represented. There were few attempts to provide an in-depth analysis of this phenomenon, and little effort was made to put the examined problems in a general context. NPW is a four-year project aimed to provide new opportunities to women aged 18-35, who run the risk of being trafficked, through a variety of support and information services. It is administered by Winrock International, a US non-governmental organization, with funding from the US Agency for International Development (USAID). IJC participates in the implementation of the project awareness-raising component. Media monitoring focuses on the coverage of human trafficking, prevention thereof, as well as the way Moldovan media report about the major facets of the NPW project. Quarterly monitoring reports are produced in Romanian, Russian, and English. They can be accessed in electronic form at http://ijc.md/npw For more information, please contact Natalia Angheli-Zaicenco at nangheli@ijc.md(IJC).
