Moldovan journalists learn about trafficking coverage in Ukraine (26 September)
IJC @ 10:30 PST, 26/09/05

Ten Moldovan journalists from a variety of national and local publications as well as a regional news agency spent one week in Kiev, studying the experience of three Ukrainian newspapers in reporting about human trafficking. The study trip was organized as part of the “New Perspectives for Women” – a comprehensive socio-economic project aimed to provide better opportunities for young women through a range of training, information and support services. Internships at “Den,” “Fakty i Kommentarii” and “Segodnya” offered Moldovan journalists a possibility to learn details about the papers’ editorial policy and shadow journalists developing relevant stories. Reports about the study visit appeared both in Ukrainian and Moldovan newspapers. NPW is administered by “Winrock International,” a U.S.-based NGO with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The Independent Journalism Center (IJC) participates in the implementation of the project awareness-raising component. In the framework of the project the IJC has organized five workshops for broadcast professionals, supervised the production of a public service announcement (PSA) on the issue, and will oversee the launching of a series of broadcasts on local TV and radio stations. The project also offers an opportunity for Moldovan women to intern at local media as an alternative to going abroad (IJC).
